I decided that I would do a little blog about my little guy that has turned our lives upside down and inside out, but we are loving every minute of it (even if he doesn’t sleep at night!) I’m really lucky to have an awesome job where I can work from home and get to watch my monster grow! Here are some snaps I thought I would share of his first year.
Deciding when to have kids can be a tough decision but once you have made it then there is no going back! I found out I was pregnant around the 5 Dec 2011, we decided not to tell anyone until 3 months because 3 months before I had a miscarriage and didn’t want anyone to get excited again until I knew that everything was fine. It was scary going for the first scan because all you want to hear is that heartbeat and you don’t want to get too excited because the last time you ended up being so disappointed. It was such an awesome sound to hear and I knew this time everything would be fine. I had hoped for a girl as most woman do but in the back of my mind I knew it was a boy. I guess I thought a girl would be easier for some reason, oh and the clothes are much cuter too. When I heard it was a boy I must admit I was a little disappointed but once he was born I didn’t care and wouldn’t want it any other way.
“The Little bean” at 9 weeks
I had a very easy pregnancy, I never had morning sickness or any funny cravings. I suffered from bad heartburn and that was about it. The strangest time was when he started kicking and you could see it, like some sort of alien moving inside you. When I was about 36/7 weeks I asked my good and talented photographer friend Carmen Visser if she could take some photos of Werner and I.

The night we went into hospital
Alex was suppose to make his appearance on the 12 Aug 2011 but he was no where to be seen! So on the 16 Aug 2011 I decided to go to the hospital to be induced and when that didn’t work I was induced again. Eventually my water broke and small contractions started and I thought hmmm this isn’t so bad! HAH whatever! They gave me a drip which had medication that would help bring on the contractions, well laughing gas doesnt work and it isn’t funny, although Werner thought it was funny when I started crying and then straight after I was laughing just a little!
Eventually I gave up and asked for an epidural! Alex’s heart rate started to drop so they decided that an emergency c-section would be the best way to go. It was a horrible experience for me because it was so rushed and I felt a little alone because there were so many people around me and Werner was stuck in the corner. Its the weirdest sensation when they cut and pull the baby out, you can feel everything but its not painful. After they pulled him out I could hear the nurses saying how gorgeous he is! WHATEVER, I’m sorry but any mother who thinks their newborn child is beautiful is seriously high on pain medication! All I saw was a monster looking at me with one eye and all that was going through my mind was “oh ____beep, I cant push him back, what have I done!” I guess I sound like an awful mom but I’m sure most parents feel the same thing but will never admit it or say it out loud, but its scary to have a child for the first time because you have no idea what to expect.
Every time the nurses said how gorgeous he was, I kept saying he looks like an alien cause seriously he did. After a bath and a feed he started to look like a human and then I thought he was an adorable looking monkey, lol.
Gorgeous!!!!! Were they blind!
I get a fright every time I see this pic!
Sigourney Weaver with one of her aliens! haha
First family pic
Now there are 2 aliens in this photo and I’m not one of them.
OK now he looks cute and cuddly!

2 1/2 months. Alex and his fiancé Zoey who was born the day before him. I can already see the love!
When you are the one with the camera all the time you hardly ever get pics of yourself with your baby so have to do them in the mirror
3 months. This was his first overseas trip to Seychelles for a wedding and the first swim he had too. The sun was so bright that I don’t think he enjoyed it too much.
2nd Family portrait taken by a fancy blackberry camera haha
4 months. This was his 2nd overseas trip to visit his favourite aunty and uncle in New Zealand. 19 hrs of flying but luckily it was a night flight and so he slept most of the way but we wont talk about the day flight on the way home! Never again or not until hes a lot older.
One of my favourite pics of Alex, all he ever does is smile. Plus I love the funny hairstyle.
Alex with his niece Caitlin on the ferry going to Auckland
Learning to crawl, one of the best times because then they stop moaning because now they can actually get things themselves.
Mom doing the usual stupid things
Fiancé Zoey came for a visit, I just love the expressions on their faces “double trouble”

First outing at beach and I just love the taste of sand in my mouth!
Me and my furry fwiend! I honestly dont know how Oscar puts up with Alex pulling his hair and tail but for some reason Oscar just rolls over for more. Its like having 2 kids in the house!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEX, I know you cant read this but one day you will be able too. Thanks for being such a cute kid and always making us smile, our lives wouldn’t be the same without you. Xx Mom & Dad

So lovely Jo! Beautiful photographs of a beautiful family. I can’t believe he’s already a world traveller at the tender age of 1! He is a gorgeous laddie, congrats to you two. And next time I’m in CT, if Oscar goes missing it has NOTHING to do with me ;o)
Happy birthday my favourite nephew. We all miss you so much. Love you lots you little monkey!
Ahhhhhh Joanne! These photographs are so beautiful, its been amazing seeing Alex grow. It feels like yest that you were pregnant! Congrads on your sons first birthday whoop whoop
Aww what a fab little story and some gorgeous pictures there. I read your birth story and I could have written that, it was almost identical to what happened to me and how I felt (except I was ill for at least 10 weeks afterwards). He’s a gorgeous boy and you have more fun times to come. I can’t believe how time has flown and my Alex will be 2 in a couple of weeks!! He is a proper little man, knows what he wants, is really helpful, comes out with new words every week and has us holding our aching sides with all the laughing at him especially when he does his little dance to theme tunes of TV shows lol!! Happy Birthday to your little Alex x x x
Ag isn,t he just so cute? Even though at the moment he’s blowing snot bubbles and has candles!! I miss my other 3 grandkids and they,re just as cute, although theyre a bit old to be called cute, I,m sure Brendon would be embarrased unless it was a 13 year old girl saying it! But Ethan is cute and so is Caitlin, anyway tarra luvs from your grandma XXXX
